Bell’s palsy is a neurological disorder that causes temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face. This occurs when the facial nerve, also called the seventh cranial nerve, becomes inflamed, swollen or compressed, disrupting the signals that control the facial muscles. This causes weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, which usually develops suddenly and peaks within 48 hours.
